The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to use the non-prescription drug Viagra, which is manufactured in Canada and is sold under the name Cialis, in pharmacies that sell the drug online.
Cialis is the brand name for the drug tadalafil, which belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. The Food and Drug Administration has not determined if the Canadian drugstore chain, which has a limited supply of Cialis, has any responsibility for its use, and has sold the drug on its website for more than three decades, in Canada and on its website for over a decade.
In 2011, the FDA warned the public about the safety of the non-prescription drug, warning consumers to take caution when purchasing products from online pharmacies. Some of the drugs sold on the site, including Viagra, have been found to have serious side effects, including dangerously low blood pressure and fainting, and have been linked to serious adverse reactions. The warning also mentioned that Viagra could cause severe vision problems, including damage to the optic nerve in patients who use the drug. According to the FDA, Viagra is only approved for use by men 18 and older.
The agency said the safety information on the website did not mention any serious side effects and that consumers should report any unusual symptoms or other concerns to the physician, who will decide if the drug is appropriate for them.
